I LEARNED THESE 5 THINGS FROM MY DAUGHTER AT ROLLER DERBY

My youngest daughter is in roller derby.


Badass, right? 

She loves it & it’s super fun to watch.

She practices twice per week, and a couple times a year they have derby bouts.

Last weekend, her team had a bout.

Leading up to it she was extra nervous.  So much so that she was talking herself out of going.

We tried to talk with her about it, but she was set on not going.
Our kids don’t always listen to us. What’s with that? 

Sometimes the message hits differently when it’s coming from someone else.

In her last practice leading up to the bout, her coach helped her see how important it was that she be there.

Not only is she a strong skater & blocker, she is also one of the older girls on the team, and it would help some of the newer girls to have Syd there.

After speaking with her coach, Syd changed her mind and went to the bout.

She got over her nerves real quick.
She had a fun time.
Her team won. By a lot.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand, she won MVP for top blocker.
Definitely a proud dad moment.

And she was extra proud of herself.

I’m sure it was a big big confidence booster for her as well.

Some good takeaways here that carry over from derby to life…

  👍  We can overcome our nervous feeling quickly
  👍  Just do it. More often than not, you’ll surprise yourself.
  👍  Your team needs you.
  👍  The more you practice, the better you get.
  👍  If you are not getting through to your kid, try a different approach.
